Table of Contents

PureVPN offers a very attractively priced VPN service that scores well on security and privacy for your internet connection. In addition, the service has a wide variety of options.

Unfortunately, PureVPN sometimes suffers small glitches during daily internet access use, such as visiting websites, which does not always go smoothly.

Keep reading our PureVPN review to find out more about this VPN service that allows you to browse web traffic using a different IP address or dedicated IPs.

Android app, iOS app, Windows app

In terms of ease of use, PureVPN scores a 6.3 in this PureVPN review. Specifically:

  • PureVPN has a great website where you can purchase PureVPN.
  • The VPN interface works quite well on the Windows app.
  • The connection to the ‘recommended’ server failed in our testing.
  • The Android TV app and iOS app worked smoothly for us.

VPN connection installation and interface

Requesting and installing PureVPN on Windows is a piece of cake. You pay for it online and you can immediately download and install the VPN software.

Mobile apps

The interface in the Windows app is fine. All options are easy to find, for example for switching VPN protocols. In our experience, the service works a lot better and faster on Android and iOS. Here, too, the service had no problems automatically detecting the best server.

VPN server use

It is remarkable that PureVPN Windows app immediately searches for the ‘recommended server’ after startup. This is a bit confusing, but the search for this server takes so long that you soon look further into other ways to make the connection.

In the menu showing the locations, you cannot choose the recommended server, but you can choose from a wide range of virtual servers worldwide. This is not a disaster for most people, but we were sorry to see this.

Connection glitches

Connecting to a VPN server is reasonably fast, but if you want to switch to another server, it doesn't always go well.

Manually connecting to a Dutch or Indian server went fine in my case.

You often get pop-ups asking ‘is PureVPN working for you?’ You will see this irritating message every time the connection with the VPN server is disconnected.

In summary, when it comes to ease of use, PureVPN is far from being able rest on its laurels.

Devices and operating systems

PureVPN supports almost all operating systems, including:

  • iOS and MAC
  • Windows
  • Android
  • Linux

In addition, there are browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. The nice thing about PureVPN is that it will automatically connect as soon as you open your browser, providing you with instant private internet access.

You can even use PureVPN on 10 devices simultaneously with one account.

Payment options

PureVPN accepts payments using the following options:

  • PayPal
  • Credit card (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX)
  • Crypto

Best alternative for your privacy

Surfshark is one of the best VPNs on the market with high speeds, unbreakable encryption, and an independently-audited no-logs policy.

A note of warning

The disadvantage of paying via cryptos, such as Bitcoin, is that you do not have a money-back guarantee if you want to ask for your money back.

Customer Service

Customer service is available 24/7 and responds very quickly to user questions. You will be actively and extensively assisted in looking for a solution.

The problem with the ‘recommended server’ that I described above, unfortunately, could not be solved immediately. My complaint was passed on to the backend team through a support ticket.

Privacy & safety

PureVPN features good privacy and security, scoring an 8.5 in this area.

  • Audits are performed by KPMG to ensure the security of the VPN service.
  • The choice of VPN protocols PureVPN offers is adequate.
  • PureVPN's headquarters recently moved to the British Virgin Islands (a positive).
  • Audits show that PureVPN keeps no user logs all (also a positive).

Security audit

PureVPN has taken serious steps to get the security of its VPN services in order. For one thing, PureVPN hired KPMG to perform independent service audits.

Normally, the VPN provider itself determines when such an audit is performed, but PureVPN opted for what is known as an ‘Always-On Audit’. This means that KPMG can perform an audit on PureVPN's servers at any time, without prior notice. That gives me confidence in PureVPN's security.

Protocols and encryption

When I look at the protocols and strong encryption features it offers, PureVPN's security seems to be okay.

You can choose from the following protocols:

  • IKEv2
  • OpenVPN TCP and UDP
  • WireGuard

PureVPN also offers IPv6, DNS and WebRTC leak protection.

PureVPN's log policy

KPMG's latest audit (August 2021) found that PureVPN lives up to its no-logs claim. That means no logs are kept of your:

  • Internet activities (visited websites)
  • Connection logs
  • VPN session logs
  • Real IP address
  • Assigned VPN IP addresses

It is evident that PureVPN places a strong emphasis on the privacy of its users.

KPMG

I am pleased with this.

ProXPN Expert Tip

When choosing a VPN, it’s important to consider everything that it offers. Many alternative options, like NordVPN, offer similar (or even better) no-logs policies, independent audits, and security features – without any doubts about their overall security practices.

Headquarters location

PureVPN recently relocated its headquarters from Hong Kong to the British Virgin Islands. This is a good step forward for PureVPN, as in the BVI the US or Chinese authorities cannot demand data from users.

According to another well-known VPN review site, this VPN provider does keep session logs. It appears that data has been exchanged with the American authorities at least once in the past.

Despite this report, I give PureVPN the benefit of the doubt when it comes to privacy. A lot seems to have happened to improve privacy for those using its VPN services, given the move of its head office and the audits.

Speed

PureVPN scores a 7.8 for upload speeds and download speeds, because:

  • Loading a website for the first time is not always quick.
  • PureVPN is suitable for achieving high theoretical speeds.

Daily use speed

Ninety percent of the time, PureVPN works fine, but there were times in researching this PureVPN review when websites did not load quickly. I experienced an annoying delay when requesting a website for the first time. One website, the Consumers' Association site, never loaded at all.

Unsuccessful PureVPN website browsing activities like that leave something to be desired.

Theoretical speeds

The theoretical speeds that PureVPN achieves are perfectly fine, as shown by the screenshots below done via speedtest.net.

First, I did a baseline measurement:

Then I enabled the VPN service.

These were the results:

On the basis of these figures, downloading, using streaming services or gaming is no problem at all. This is exactly what can be expected from a good VPN.

Options

PureVPN scores 7.1 for the options it offers.

  • There is a large choice of server locations, but there aren't many choices in some individual countries.
  • PureVPN is downloadable.
  • The service is less suitable for certain streaming services.
  • There are many additional options for a fee, such as dedicated IP addresses and port forwarding.
  • A temporary free version is available: You can try PureVPN for free for 31 days (but you have to subscribe first).

VPN servers and locations

PureVPN has a fairly extensive server network:

  • Approximately 6,500 servers worldwide
  • 96 server locations, spread around the world in more than 78 countries

As a local example of server options: in the Netherlands there is only one server, namely in Amsterdam, which is also a P2P server. The VPN connection competition, for example the NordVPN, ProtonVPN or PIA VPN companies, offers a much wider choice of VPN servers, at least in our country.

This was my experience. You should always take a look at what is offered in your country before making a decision.

Streaming and downloading

PureVPN offers a number of P2P servers that are ideal for downloading large files such as torrents. The streaming service also seems to work fine, for example via NPO Start and Ziggo. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect to the American Netflix library.

Port forwarding and dedicated IP addresses

You can extend PureVPN's offerings with the following VPN services (for an additional fee):

  • Dedicated IP, which costs 2.52 euros per month
  • Port Forwarding, which costs 0.84 euros per month
  • DDos Protection, which costs 3.37 euros per month

No free trial

There is no free trial with this VPN. However, you can request your money back within 31 days, for example, if you are not satisfied or just wanted to test a VPN.

When canceling your subscription, it is not mandatory to give a specific reason, although customer service will do everything they can to keep you as a customer. Within 7 days I received the money back into my account.

I hope this PureVPN review has been helpful. Let me know if you decided to sign up.
